Spotlight from 08/13/2008

In 2008, Winterland combine rocking guitars with melancholic vocals, spherical synthesizers and contemporary loops. The stylistic mélange tries to stay away from any short-lived trends and can be described as a symbiosis of traditional Eigthies-Rock (Survivor, Magnum), Classic Rock (Bruce Springsteen) and scandinavian styles (HIM, Sunrise Avenue). Especially singer Thorsten Fries, by the way a classically trained barytone, makes Winterland’s sound and style fancy in its own way. Deep voices like these can not be found in common Rock-music very often, indeed. The press however tends to compare his unusual voice and style to singers such as e.g. Bruce Springsteen, Ville Valo (HIM), Nick Holmes (Paradise Lost) and Gary Hughes (Ten).
